FE CHAMPIONS MARCH 2007

Karen Simmonds

Claire Lovatt

Career History

Education Manager for a Cat C Prison in Surrey. I have been in this role for three years, previously Deputy Education Manager at the same establishment, Tutor at another Prison for young offenders and before that lecturer in ICT at Brooklands College

Interview

PCET Network: What do you enjoy most about teaching adult learners?

I enjoy giving adult learners the confidence to learn and pride in themselves when they achieve.

PCET Network: How important  do you think prisoner education is, and why?

I think education plays a vital role in the rehabilitation of prisoners.  It gives many a sense of achievement that they may never have felt before.  Many offenders can’t read or write, how can they function in society?  They couldn’t even take a driving test without these basic skills so many of us take for granted.

PCET Network: Do you have any good advice that you wish to give to FE/ Prison Tutors?

I guess the most important thing is, I believe, to have a good team of people around you.  My staff room is a haven for all tutors, a safe place to talk to other staff in the same situation.  You must never pre judge people and if something is worrying you then talk to other staff, don’t take the problems home with you.

PCET Network: What would you say to someone that is thinking about becoming a Prison Tutor?

I find it the most rewarding role I have ever done.  To help someone write a letter to his child for the first time is an amazing feeling.  Most of our learners are so grateful of the help we give them, and you don’t have to deal with parents!!  I would recommend teaching in a prison, but always come and have a look to see if you would feel comfortable first.

PCET Network: Do you have any interesting hobbies or pastimes?

I jet ski most weekends in the summer, and ride horses.  I guess after being in closed conditions all week its nice to be out in open space.

PCET Network is pleased to introduce Karen Simmonds as the PCET Network FE Champion for March 2007.
