FE CHAMPIONS APRIL 2007

Peter Parfitt

Claire Lovatt

Interview

PCET Network: What is your job role? How long have you been doing it? Career History?

I’ve been involved in the teaching of adults since January 1983, on an off.  I’ve taken a couple of breaks from it to do other things in my primary career.  My primary career is a police officer but I’ve been able to instruct both inside the job and as an adjunct instructor in our FE system.

PCET Network: What do you enjoy most about teaching adult learners?

I enjoy seeing people discovering new things.  Fairly obvious but important to me.

PCET Network: Do you have any good advice that you wish to share with other FE Tutors?

Probably nothing that isn’t already known I’m afraid.  I suppose the most important thing  s not to let your ego get in the way of others’ learning.

PCET Network: How did you become an FE Tutor?

Accidentally.  I was included on an experimental course and the tutors asked me to transfer to their unit after I finished the course.

PCET Network: What would you say to someone that is thinking about becoming an FE Tutor?

Like any other vocational calling, you’ll know if you want to do it or not but only until you do it.  If you like working with people then go for it, if you don’t like working with people then give it a miss.

PCET Network: Do you have any interesting hobbies or pastimes?

Bushwalking, learning Linux, painting (acrylics, I’m working my way up to oils), writing, camping, travelling as much as I can, current affairs and politics (not just reading about it but getting involved).

PCET Network is pleased to introduce Peter Parfitt as the PCET Network FE Champion for April 2007.

Note: If you feel that you, or a tutor that you know, deserves to be recognised as an FE Champion, then please submit their name and email address to info@pcet.net – quoting FE Champion in the subject field.
