Post subject: Which is best PGCE or PCET?

Hi,
I have just joined the site.
My question is this, which is the best qualification to get? I am a mature student and this time next year will, hopefully, have got my degree in Photography.
I do not have O level Maths and do not want to spend a year studying at night school to get it, I had a very bad time at school due to various problems and was wrongly marked as being unintelligent and a waste of space. To cut a long story short, I would prefer to teach in a University or Adult Education which is I believe, where the PCET comes in. However, when I made enquiries at a local college, I was looked at in disdain because of the subject, Photography.
I have worked in Youth work and taught film making, written and produced plays, worked as an Actress and a Trainer, and am really keen to teach.
If I don't have O level Maths then I can't study the PGCE, but the PCET course tutor won't even talk to me until next year when it could be to late if I am turned down - which I think is likely.
Should I reconsider the PGCE and Maths? No one I know who is currently teaching seem to have heard of the PCET and I don't want to choose the wrong qualification - which also happened to me at school.
Lastly, do I need a degree in the subject I teach as I can quite happily teach drama, singing, performance etc.

Jamie, don't worry. Many of us come to FE from multiskilled backgrounds and employers like flexible people, even though the job adverts tend to be very specialised. Everyone wants to attract the highest qualified personnel for the least pay - that's the problem of skrinking budgets, but increasing demand of sucess rates.
Your provider should be screening your Basic/functional skills as a matter of course and you can try online practice tests such as BKSB or from the NIACE (Basic Skills Agency) sites to gain some confidence. Your provider is probably holding back because a lot of colleges are struggling to finance course provision at the moment! Look further afield? The only advantage of PGCE is probably a greater flexibilty in choice of teaching environments. The question is despite your experience how seriously do you want to teach? You are a mature student, so take control of what you want to achieve. Hugh |

| I am looking to teach within F.E. colleges and have been researching the PGCE. I have been speaking to one of my old college lecturers and he said that the PGCE for primary and secondary schools awards you with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). I've been told that their is a PGCE (FE) version, sometimes refereed to as the PGCE post-16 qualification. Is this the PCET or is that something in a different league of its own? |
